Architecture & Design

The objects, and presenting it as a question (What’s an Object?) is a way of changing the perspective and opening up the conversation to new processes and reconfigurations. Objects are linked to experiences that are not only about the haptic. Objects can transcend physical limits and measures. Objects can condition the way we inhabit, can give us shelter, inspire, be useful, be luxurious, be infinite, be intangible. An object, the phone with a camera was crucial to the BLM movement. An object, a piece of paper with a vote has had the power to renew hope for democracy. Another complex object, a vaccine has dragged emotions and geopolitics for months. 2020 has made us re-signify other objects such as monuments, roofs, computers as means to access to education, streets, domestic spaces and not take them for granted.

The image on the cover was created by MOS and we think that brings an interesting paradox, were impersonated objects (as the speaking buildings in this issue) present themselves without closure, and blurring the limit between being a physical and a digital object.

NESS has 3 different sections that propose diverse approaches and moments to read them. For this issue, in the Browser section, the work of Stephen Burks is perfect for a Sunday morning with a cup of coffee listening to Joy Division’s Unknown Pleasures or the interview with Timothy Morton in the Dossier, it reads better at the end of the day, with a glass of Whiskey and listening to Sonic Youth. Finally, in Documents we featured MOS and Productora, it has a lot of visual information that can be scrutinized and analyzed while working and looking for triggers in a creative environment, listening to Kraftwerk.

We included this in the previous answer.

Reason for print format
As it can tell by this issue’s title, we are fixed with objects. We think of NESS as a repository of ideas of our time. We have the strong confidence that there are still things that can remain, have a value and a certain stability in this dispersion in which we live today. NESS was created with the logic of being an archive of ideas and reflections that in the future can be organized and understood to build new ideas and knowledge on them.
